Culpepper Land and Farming History

Eugene Barksdale Culpepper and Ella Culpepper bought 400 acres around 1944. This same year Mr. Culpeper passed at the age of 50 and Robert Sr., Woods Culpepper and E.B. Culpepper each inherited 80 acres each. The girls, Ruth, Bill Annie Lou, Skeeter and Sis got the remainder. Robert Sr. joined the army in 1941 and was discharged and came home in 1944. Robert worked hard and eventually bought all of the 400 acres and built his family home there.

In 1950 Robert Culpepper, Sr. bought several tracts of land called Isham Bottom. The land was purchased from the Smiley and Tyus families. The first tracts of land were purchased for $1.50 an acre. By the time the last tracts of land were purchased the price had soared to $200 an acre. In all there is a total of 929 acres of Isham Bottom land.

In 1955 the first of three ponds was formed spanning over 3 acres.  Here the Culpepper family enjoyed many weekend picnics at the pond. In 1959 the second pond was formed spanning over 10 acres and providing plenty of room for the children to water ski.
The farm reached its peak in 1980 housing 1,100 acres of cotton, 1,000 acres soybeans, 750 acres of wheat and 200 acres of hay along with numerous cows and bulls.
